What is Samsung Odin?

Odin3 is Samsung's official tool for flashing firmware (ROM), Recovery, Bootloader, or Modem files on Samsung Galaxy devices. With the help of Samsung Odin3, users can unbrick, unroot, and return the device back to stock firmware. If you have soft-bricked your Samsung Galaxy device and can't find a way to fix it, then flash the stock firmware using Odin3 and restore the device/unbrick the device.

Samsung Odin for Mac and Linux

Samsung Odin is mainly developed for the Windows platform and is not available for Mac and Linux. But all thanks to the famous XDA developer/contributor AdamOutler, Samsung Odin for Mac and Linux is now possible with the port by the name JOdin. It is a direct port of the Odin for Windows, and it now works on all the three platforms – Windows, Mac, and Linux.

We can also use Odin on Mac using Heimdall, a cross-platform open-source tool suite for flashing firmware and ROMs on Samsung devices. It is believed that the Odin Flash Tool got its name from the king of gods in Norse mythology. So, keeping this into account, the developers of Heimdall named it after the Norse God and guardian of the Bifrost Bridge.

Both Samsung JOdin and Heimdall are Odin alternatives for Mac and Linux, and they are available for all three platforms – Windows, Mac, and Linux.

If you're looking for Samsung Odin for Mac/ Samsung Odin for Linux, we recommend you to download JOdin. JOdin3 is a direct port of windows version of Samsung Odin. It works with Mac OS and Linux platforms.

Why use JOdin3?

The official Samsung flashing tool Odin is available for only the Windows platform. But what if you are using Mac OS or Linux? In this situation, JOdin3 comes to rescue.

JOdin is platform-independent, and it just requires the Java Runtime Environment. So, it is the perfect and highly recommended alternative for Samsung Odin.

However, unlike Odin, JOdin is not considered as an official flashing software. But it works perfectly and gets the job of flashing Stock firmware, Recovery, Root package, and other mods done easily.

JOdin – Requirements

Before you can download and install Odin on Mac or Linux or Windows, you need to configure your system accordingly.

  1. Download and install the Java Runtime Environment.
  2. On Windows, make sure you have proper Samsung USB drivers installed. If not, they will be installed automatically with Heimdall.
  3. Download and install Heimdall – Windows, macOS, and Linux.
  4. Uninstall Samsung KIES/Smart Sync from your computer.

How to install JOdin on Mac OS X

We have written the complete step-by-step instruction on how to install JOdin on Mac. The process is quite simple and easy to follow.

Odin Mac Catalina

  1. First of all, download and install the Java Runtime Environment on macOS.
  2. Once the JRE is installed on your computer, download and install Heimdall for macOS. Download the heimdall-suite-1.4.0-mac.dmg and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. If you have Samsung Smart Switch or Samsung KIES installed on your computer, then uninstall them so they won't interfere with JOdin.
  4. Now, download and extract the JOdin3CASUAL-r1142-dist.zip file from the above downloads section to your Mac computer.
  5. Now open the JOdin3CASUAL.jar file from the extracted folder.
  6. Now, JOdin Mac should open, and you'll see the screen similar to the screenshot below.

How to install JOdin on Linux

The process of installing JOdin on Linux (Odin for Linux) is similar to the process of installing JOdin on Mac.

  1. First of all, download and install Java Runtime Environment and Heimdall for Linux on your Linux machine.
  2. Now download and extract the JOdin3CASUAL-r1142-dist.zip file on your computer.
  3. Now, open JOdin3CASUAL.jar from the extracted folder.
  4. Once JOdin launches, you can start flashing files to your Samsung Galaxy device.

How to use JOdin on Mac OS X and Linux

Once you have installed JOdin3 on mac OS and Linux, the process is similar to how we use Samsung Odin on Windows. If this is the first time you are working with Odin / JOdin, then we have written a step-by-step tutorial on how to use JOdin on Mac/Linux to flash the firmware.

  1. Download the suitable firmware (ROM) / Recovery / Root package file for your device in .tar or .tar.md5 format.
  2. Now enable USB Debugging on your Samsung Galaxy device from Settings > Developer Options. Here is a detailed guide on how to enable USB debugging on Android.
  3. Open JOdin on your Mac/Linux machine.
  4. Click on the PDA button in JOdin and select the .tar or .tar.md5 file that you have downloaded in Step #1.
  5. Power off your Samsung Galaxy device and boot the device into Download Mode.
  6. Connect your Samsung Galaxy device to your computer with a USB cable.
  7. If everything goes well, you will see a green Connected message under ID:COM in JOdin.
  8. Make sure only the Auto-Reboot option is checked in JOdin, and other options are unchecked.
  9. Click on the Start button to proceed.
  10. Next, you need to have the PIT file of your phone. Click Yes and proceed.
  11. Now, again boot your phone into Download Mode as you did in Step #5. This time JOdin will fetch your phone's PIT file automatically.
  12. Once done, a message will be displayed on the screen about the same. Click on OK to proceed.
  13. Click on the Start button again to start the installation process.
  14. If everything went well, then you should see a PASS message in JOdin3. If you see the FAILED message, then it means something has gone wrong.

About the Program

The Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island is an ideal base for underwater research with convenient access to both temperate nearshore and open water environments. Situated in Big Fisherman's Cove, a nearby marine life refuge established in 1989 offers soft clean sediment, kelp forests and a wide diversity of marine life. The waters just a short distance offshore are deep enough for excellent blue-water diving.

The USC Wrigley Institute conducts a university dive program in accordance with the standards set forth by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS). USC is an AAUS Organizational Member and recognizes dive certifications from other AAUS organizational members through reciprocity.

Underwater research at the WMSC requires active AAUS Scientific Diver certification for every member of the diving party.

How to Dive with the USC Scientific Diving Program

USC Divers:

The following steps are required for USC Scientific Divers to dive with our program:

  1. Research at the Wrigley Marine Science Center and within the marine refuge must be approved by the Diving Safety Officer (DSO) and the Assistant Director of Scientific Operations, Wrigley Marine Science Center, Lauren Oudin. Applicants must fill out a Research Activity Plan.
  2. Contact the USC DSO to request a copy of the USC Scientific Diver Information Form. This form requires divers to provide proof of the following: Scuba medical clearance, SCUBA certification, DAN (or equivalent) dive medical insurance, CPR, AED, First Aid and O2 certification, and proof of gear service within the previous 12 months or a purchase receipt within the previous 12 months.
  3. Register in the USC Diver Database. USC scientific divers are required to log all training dives. Once registered and activated, it is the diver’s responsibility to maintain their certifications. Divers may check their certification expiration via their profile page. All certifications and dive logs must be current before dive plans will be considered for approval. If there are any questions, please contact the DSO.
  4. All USC divers must complete acheck out dive with the DSO. Check out dives are regularly scheduled at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina (1st Thursday of the month) or on the mainland (2nd Saturday of the month at Redondo Beach Veterans Park), or at other times of convenience to the diver. Please contact the DSO to schedule your check out dive.
    During your check out dive, you will be required to show proficiency in the following skills:
    • Surface dive to 10 feet in open water without scuba
    • Air sharing (donor and receiver)
    • Enter and leave open water, surf or diving vessel while geared up
    • Surface kick 400 yards in scuba gear, but while not breathing on scuba
    • Maneuverability at and below the surface
    • Simulated emergency swimming ascent
    • Mask and regulator clearing while submerged
    • Achieve and maintain neutral buoyancy
    • Self- and buddy rescue
    • Underwater navigation
    • Dive planning
    • Judgment adequate for safe diving

Once you are current in all your requirements, you may submit your Dive Planonline. Checkout dive plans should be submitted for approval at least seven days prior to planned dive operations (please contact the DSO directly if your plans necessitate a faster turnaround time). All other Dive plans must be submitted online and receive approval from the DSO at least 24 hours prior to dive operations.

The following steps are required for Non-USC Scientific Divers from other AAUS organizational members to dive with our program:

  1. Research at the Wrigley Marine Science Center and within the marine refuge must be approved by the Diving Safety Officer (DSO) and the WMSC Laboratory Manager, Lauren Oudin. The online Research Activity Plan is available here, and our current Diving Safety Manual is available here.
  2. Please submit the following to the USC DSO:
    Letter of Reciprocity (LOR)
    Approved Dive Plan from your DSO. LORs and Dive Plans must be submitted and receive approval from the USC DSO at least 24 hours prior to the dive operation.
  3. All divers conducting scientific dive operations at the Wrigley Marine Science Center are required to log all dives on the USC Scientific Diver Database. Please contact the USC DSO for Registration instructions. Registration is required prior to arrival and dive authorization.
  4. Complete a Dive Orientation Briefing on arrival (15 minutes)
Dive Planning and Equipment Policy

All divers must provide their own dive gear to conduct underwater research at the Wrigley Marine Science Center. 80 cf aluminum and steel cylinders with yoke-type and DIN valves are available. Due to the limited amount of DIN cylinders available for use, adapters are highly recommended. Please be sure your equipment is complete and functional prior to arrival. A limited selection of dive equipment is available locally (2 miles from the WMSC) at the Two Harbors Dive and Recreation Center.

The following equipment is required:

A mask, snorkel, fins, appropriate exposure protection (wet or dry), weight belt and weights, regulator with redundant second stage (also known as an 'octopus'), buoyancy compensator, pressure gauge, depth gauge, timing device, compass, an audible signaling device, a safety sausage and a cutting tool.

All divers will be issued a dive data recorder (Blue Buddy). Divers are required to carry this data recorder during all dive operations.

The following equipment is recommended:

A dive computer, save-a-dive kit, calculator, extra pencils, dive light, marker lights for night dives, DIN to yoke adaptor (if you use DIN valves) and a slate capable of holding an 8.5' x 11' data sheet.

Top-side Tending Requirements for USC Owned Vessels

Top-side tending is required during all dive operations from Arrow Point (towards the West End) to Seal Rock (towards the East End) – Except Cat Harbor.

Hyperbaric Chamber: The USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber is an emergency medical facility on Catalina Island for the treatment of scuba diving accidents. The chamber facilities are on the waterfront of the Wrigley Marine Science Center and adjacent to a helipad that is licensed for day or night helicopter landings. The chamber itself is large enough to treat several patients at once and provides enough room for staff and volunteers to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life support for patients who arrive in cardiac arrest.
